1. Keep it simple
This isn?t a fashion show. You want to come across as professional but you also want your interviewers to focus on your skills and not on how you dress. So keep it simple. Don?t overload on accessories and keep it mild on your cologne or perfume.
2. Keep it conservative
This is a work environment so it?s always important to keep a professional look while there. Even if your interviewer is dressed casually in jeans, you should still show up in professional work attire. It?s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Avoid showing too much cleavage or too much skin.
3. Good personal hygiene
Don?t deter your interviewer with distractions such as poor personal hygiene. Don?t forget to brush your teeth and have fresh breath for your interview. Keep your fingernails clean and free of dirt. Make sure your hair is trimmed and everything is neat and tidy.
4. Don?t forget body language
Interview attire goes beyond the clothes; it includes your body language! Sit up straight during an interview, don?t forget to keep a smile on your face, have a strong handshake. All these little things can make a big difference when talking with another individual. People who slouch in their chairs or have their arms crossed can come off as uninterested and bored. Leaning forward can show that you are engaged and enthusiastic.
Not quite sure how to evaluate your attire? Practice in front of a mirror or have a friend evaluate you. He or she can provide their initial reaction for you, which can provide insight on what that initial first reaction will be from your interviewer.
